He everybody! It’s Heath, and in this tutorial I want to talk to you about the cedar shingles that I was using to use as my siding for my house. Or predominately for the siding. Of course I used the cedar bevel down here, and then when I cross over, here’s that furring strip which will allow me to put on the piece of trim here and then when I went up above that and I started using a bunch of shingles. These are just red cedar shingles. I think they look very.
Very nice. I’ve very pleased with them. I love the way they came out, but they did take quite a bit of work to get looking like this as far as their appearance goes, and then also their application to the house. So these are just some other samples that I have here. These are how they come. They come in all different widths like this. They are a standard height though, and then they come unfinished. This is probably the color more that they come. So you can see the difference there. And then.
I prepped them and put them on the house. What I did is I put stain, and I want to talk more about the stain and sealant that I used in another tutorial because I learned a lot about that as I was doing this. But I individually hand dipped every one of these shingles into stain and sealant. I didn’t want to do anything where I had to spray the house, or paint things on the house. You could do that but my thinking was, that I want to make sure that the.
How to Build a Tiny House Cedar Shingles
The exterior siding of my house is very waterproof its very, everything is locked up very well. You kind of think about, or I do, as I was starting to do this and putting all the siding on the house, thinking of your siding as armor for your house. And so I already wanted to make sure I had a strong layer of armor on the house. And, when you’re building it really is the best time to do all of your sealing and your staining and so forth because it is really the time when you can really do it the best.
Once it gets on the house you are not going to be able to do it as well. Now later I know that I’m going to have to redo treatments to the house probably every few years because I want to keep it looking nice and I want to keep it waterproof and everything. And in that case I will just do the spraying and so forth to the side of the house. But when I was doing this for the first time I wanted to make sure that it was done right and done well.
So, what I did was I took the stain and sealant. It was in one that I wanted to use for this. It was natural. It was called a natural color. And then. this is not it by the way, these are some other samples that I decided to reject. But then what I did is I took all of that stain and sealant and I poured it into a bin, just a tupperware, or a Rubbermaid bin, so it was shallow and then I would take each shingle and I would dip one side and turn it over and dip the other side.
Into the stain. I wore some staining gloves, some rubber staining gloves while I was doing that so it doesn’t get all over your hands, and then dip dip and then I would take a big brush and I would wipe off the sides of it. So that I would have all of the coloration on them and then I would hang them up to dry on a clothes line. Let them all dry like that. So I would set up what I call the staining station with the stain, the shingles, and then.
The clothes line where I would dip them all, dip both sides, and then leave them up to dry. Once they were dry then I would come over here and put them up to the tiny house. And that was also great because once they on the house then, it didn’t require any other staining, didn’t require any other work. Once the shingle was attached, it was done. This, was a way to put a lot of stain into the shingles. You know, if you, this is why I said that this is the time when you are really going to be able to.
Put the stain and sealant into the shingles like you can’t do once they are on the house. Because I dipped them, I used a lot of stain. I didn’t keep track of the number of gallons I used but it was many gallons. I know I bought at least two of the large three gallon things of stain and then several other onegallon buckets because I was using all of the stain of this particular color, stain and sealant of this particular color that all of the hardware stores had.
In the area. So I had to buy what I was able to find. But it did put a lot of stain into the the shingles, and when the water when it rains out here I really don’t like it when it rains on my tiny house but when it does rain on the tiny house, the water just runs off it. Because there’s so much stain and sealant in the shingles it works extremely well. Same thing with the cedar bevel here. We’ve got two different colors going on here, and of course there’s color.
Variation in all of the shingles and in the cedar bevel, different pieces as well, but it is the same color sealant. It’s this natural stain. And so even though. and that’s a really neat thing about wood. You get a really natural look because you’ve got, okay, all red cedar shingles up here, all cedar bevel down here, when you apply the same kind of stain to them, well they come out in all these beautiful colors and really put a great amount of variation into the tiny house. I love the way that it looks. I want to talk.
