Grow the Best Garden by Building the Best Organic Soil
This is john kohler with growingyourgreens.I have another exciting episode for you, and i’m on yet another fieldtrip here. We’re in san rafael, california, so if you live in marin county or even san francisco, this is gonna be a valuable resource for you.The way i learned about this placeactually called marin soil solutionsis actually through a viewer. So if you’re that viewer that said hey, john, have you heard about marin soil solutions thank you! because that’s how i heard about it firs.T it’s all through word of mouth, because they haven’t done a lot of advertising or anything like.
That.Anyways, we’re at 3095 cerner avenue, actually right off highway 101 where it actually interests with 580, literally. And we’re at unit b and this place is open from monday through friday, nine to four or by appointment. And what they do here specifically is they basically will build your soil organically, whether they do it or they’ll teach you how and provide the things you need to build your soil so that you can get higher production, healthier plants, and actually some of the best tasting grub you’ve ever grown.So.
Let’s come inside where i’m gonna share some of the secrets with you today. Now we’re inside marin soil solutions, and this is 2what you’ll see when you enter. They got a whole display of down to earth, all natural fertilizers. And, you know, i might talk about some of these, but there’s a couple products in the warehouse and back and some of the things they’re doing that’s really impressive that i’ll share with you in a minute. But before i do, i want to talk more about the company here, and the number.
One thing i like is that this is a small, locally owned company.Actually two old college friends reconnected after a period of time, and they were into gardening and they learned about how to grow food and grow plants better.Actually through this book here, which is called teaming with microbes. So this started as a hobby businessesand those are the best kind of businesses, the businesses that you want to be at every day.You wake up, you go you work, and you’re so excited to be at work! because you love.
What you’re doing and you’re passionate about it.And that’s how i am with my business, and i’ll give my business a plug, if you guys don’t know about it.It’s discountjuicers. And that’s how they feel here as well. They’re really into this stuff because they learned that it really works. And now they’re able to help people like you and me grow better food, grow better plants at home, and even for commercial and even cities because of it.And this whole business started because of this book teaming with microbes a gardner’s.
Guide to the soil food web.And because of this book, they started this business to make some of the products and make some of the ideas that’s contained within this book available to you.So i highly encourage you guys, if you don’t have this book, hit up amazon and buy this book and read it.Because it’ll change your thoughts about agriculture and how things should be grown. The next thing i want to share with you guys, probably the most important thing here, one of the daily things they have, and it’s.
Actually six keys to a successful healthy garden.Number one, right plant, right place. So that’s very important. You don’t want to plant tomatoes in the middle of winter underneath an oak tree, right. Not the right time, not the right place.Nothing like that.So chose the right plant for you climate, and also plant this right place tomatoes, like really full sun.Number two, proper irrigation.Irrigation’s very important.Plants need water to survive much like we need food and water to survive as well.Next is mulch. You want to use some good mulch.I have a couple tutorials on using.
Woodchips as a mulch.Number four, good compost.Compost is king and some of the other things we’ll see in here are queen. There’s multiple queens. So number five, aerated compost teaand they brew a specific kind of compost tea that we brew here in a minute and show you guys how they do that. And finally, organic fertilizers if needed. If you build your soil, then you don’t actually need to use fertilizers, you can actually utilize some of the nutrients already in the soil.So that’s what we’re gonna learn about.
Today, some of the different products they sell that’ll allow you to build better soil and some of the products that’ll build your products best, they don’t even sell.So wrap that around your head for a little minute while we show you some of the items they sell so you can build your own soil.Because on this list, good compost is very important. So why don’t we talk about that next. There’s many different types of compost out there. You can go to a big box store and buy a bag of compost or inaudible is you.
Live in sonoma county, you can go to sonoma compost, which is where i get my compost, and they make a fairly good compost from what i’ve seen.Because i’ve been all over and seen compost they give away for free in like west palm beach, florida, and all that stuff.I don’t call it compost, i call that stuff a mulch. You guys get their compost, you need to literally sit in your yard, i don’t know keep it in your yard for another six months to a year and it’ll finally break down into a good compost. So compost is king.
And what they recommend here is actually get a good quality compost or better than getting a good quality compost, just make your own, people! if you have a couple trees in your yard, neighbors with trees, you’re eating fruits and vegetables and have food scraps.Pile is all up and make your own compost. The first way to build your own compost is with something like this. This is actually called a passive compost bin, and they sell this for fiftyfive dollars here. What it is it’s basically some standard galvanized.
Fencing, and they basically take some wood and put it on the edges so you’re not gonna get cut up, and they’ll sell it to you for fiftyfive bucks or you can actually just make one yourself. It’s very simple. The main thing is it needs to be a nice, large diameter.Four feet round, and this is one that they should how it’s being used. You literally take all your leaves, and i was just on the east coast and it saddens me when i see people just piling up their leaves and bagging it up for the garbage company to take.
Leaves are a very important resource that you have onsite. You should definitely build a pile, pile them up, leave them in the back of your house to compost down so you can build compost to feed your plants.Cause this is how nature works and we want to model nature. This composter is nice and handy because it contains everything. You could put leaves in there, put some food scraps in there. And i always recommend you got to mix the ratios, the carbon to the nitrogen, but even if you don’t want to mess with all that, just pile.
It up and compost will happen.Be sure to check my other tutorials where i have specific tutorials on how to compost just right so you can get the best results. And the quickest results the first time.So what we’re gonna do next is we’re gonna show you guys a couple other ways you can actually compost to start building your soil, especially if you can’t go outside to access your compost bin.In the wintertime, you can compost inside and there’s two ways you could do this.So let’s go ahead and show.
Those to you guys next.If you’re concerned that you can compost in the wintertime, cause it’s too cold outside, next i’m gonna share with you guys two ways you can compost indoors. The first way is the easiest one, it’s actually this guy. This is called an all season’s indoor composter. So unlike many composters, this uses actually a special technology from japan, and it’s actually called bokashi. And this bokashi’s an anaerobic composting method. And what you do with this is you put your food scraps in something like this, like a five gallon bucket, and there’s a couple.
Levels in there and whatnot, trays to keep the air holes, separate out the liquids. And what you’re gonna do is you’re gonna put your food waste in there, and it says you can even put meat and bones and dairy and paper and food scraps and put some of this stuff in here, which is an em or essential microbesonce again, it’s a bacteriaand you’re gonna inoculate your food scraps. The ems will start breaking down your food and produce a really rich nutrient solution for your plants. Now some people might be thinking john! if it’s breaking down in my kitchen, is.
It gonna stink well, number one, this is an airtight container.Number two, people may say oh it doesn’t stink. But it does have a pickleish type essence, or smell, when you open it.Much like opening pickles, because that’s another product of fermentation, and that’s literally what you’re doing. You’re fermenting your vegetables. When you ferment cabbage into sauer kraut, you make the sauer kraut more nutritious because of the bacteria. And that’s what you’re doing with the ems.So what you do is after you have this whole bin full, you’re just gonna basically go out into your yard, dig.
A hole, and then bury it so it can complete the decomposition process there.Another thing you can do with the bokashi ferment is actually put it in your worm bin.Which is actually what we’re gonna talk the next. The worms love this stuff and go nuts for it.It’s like giving them some drugsthat are natural. So anyways, another way that you can compost inside, whether it’s a garage or underneath your kitchen sink is a worm compost bin. We’re looking here at the worm factory 360 and this.
Is one of the bins they offer here. And basically, you’re gonna keep worms and the worms break down your food into basically compost or castings that you can now feed on your plants directly. You could take the worm castings, put them in your houseplant, put them in potted plants, and better yet even put them in your garden. So definitely another good way to compost with worms, and they’re really into that here.So next we’re gonna show you actually a few kind of worm compost bins you can easily build at home.Or if you don’t want to,.
You can come here and they’ll sell you one.The granddaddy of worm bins they have here is actually this guy right here. This is the marin soil solution’s worm bin that they produced based on plans that they got.And it’s very simple construction actually, and we’ll go into detail on how it’s working in a minute. This is gonna be the overview.Basically, it’ just a little box kind of like one of those treasure chests and you know of as a kid. It’s a nice, large size and it has a hinged lid here you can open.
Up and look inside. And we’ll go over some of the different design elements in a second, but the main thing is that this is easy to build and probably available at most places throughout the country, because it’s made with a standard, quoteunquote, grow rack.Or the gorilla rack or some other kind of like shelving unit you’d use for storing stuff in your garage that big box stores like home depot, lowes, and costco may sell.It basically has a rack and normally, these racks are like two halves, so you normally put this.
Two halves and it makes a nice, tall rack. This is just half of it and you want the heaviest duty gauge you can find. And this is just half the rack they set up with the bottom shelf, and they second shelf, but no more shelves. And there’s probably about a foot and a half or so of space between the two bottom shelves. And then up here, they basically just built a box.And this box is made out of tongue in groove wood, which is actually really nice. You could also use plywood, something like that. And they.
Got a view vent holes and stuff that we’ll show you.But how this works is we’re gonna open this up and put your food scraps in there, populate it with worms. They’re gonna eat it and then all your castings are gonna fall out the bottom. On the bottom here, they basically have a slanted piece of wood that basically allows your castings to fall through. And the secret on why this works is the worms always will go to the top of the soil, because that’s where the food is.They’ve already worked on all this food on the bottom, and.
That stuff’s just gonna drain out on the bottom. That’s the overview of this system. Now, they do sell these whole prebuilt kits here if you don’t want to build it yourself. But if you’re one of those handy guys, now i’m gonna share with you guys actually how this is specifically constructed so you guys, too, can build one of these fancy treasure chest worm composting bins.So now i’m gonna do the close up on how to construct one of these guys, and you can see it’s just a nice tongue in groove.Actually, this is very good quality construction, i.
Like it a lot. They have some nice hinges on the back in there. And if you just go ahead and open it up, you can see they basically framed it out a little bit on the inside to make it nice and strong. And if we look down below, that’s where all the worms are.So they got some cardboard here, which acts as like a sheet mulching, and if we lift up the cardboard, we’ll see all the different wormsoh, there they areunderneath, and some banana scraps and food that they’re eating. And here’s some broken down cardboard, and this.
Is how sheet mulching works. You just literally put cardboard down over your lawn, over your grass, and basically it rots down over time and worms come and they’ll eat the cardboard and eat your lawn up, and that’s a good way to build your soil and break down your lawn so you can grow some food. And inside here, what they’re doing inside the box here, what they have is they have like a liner, so they have some landscape type fabric here that lines it, and they basically staple that in.In addition, on the sides,.
They have these little vent holes. So let’s go ahead and show you those right now. They’re just little circular vent for maybe venting a house and they have little screens in there so that the bugs can’t get in.And that’s definitely really important. And that’s pretty much how it’s built. It’s just a lid and a box on the top shelf level.Going down below you can see the bottom shelf. Now we’re gonna go ahead and give you guys a shot of the side to show you the shelf is set up.It’s basically a piece of plywood.
Set diagonally, and what happens is the finish castings fall from the bottom on this and then on to the ground and you can harvest them easily. And how this specifically works is underneath here, they got this special grid material that can be a challenge to find.I think they said it’s used from like shipping pallets or something like that so this might be kinda hard to find.I don’t know exactly where you’d find something like this, and they have it lined with newspaper. What happens is the newspapers will break down over time.
And you’ll see some of this compost is just falling down. And there’s the finished casted that you then use on your garden. So the whole premise is that if you just let all this stuff drop off the bottom, and it’s gonna be the right moisture level, so it’s gonna stick together a little bit if you’re feeding your worms properly. They’ll be up at the top and all the stuff will basically drop out of the bottom for you guys. And that’s just like pretty simple, easy construction, if you got a table saw.Or even.
If you don’t, home depot will cut your wood for you.You can make a set up like this. Now, some of the improvements they did was actually in the middle of this grate here, they were getting some sagging so they put a clip here to hold the shelf up, that metal grate in the middle.Other than that, this looks like a nice solid box.So if you want to make me something for christmas, make me one of these guys.I could use it.So if you don’t want to build a treasure chest worm composting bin that i just show.
You guys, they have a few other options here that they make onsite and will sell to you guys at a very affordable price. And you could also make these very easily at home if you’re kind of handy. The first one is a standard rubbermaid rough neck tote.So this is a tote you would get like at a walmart or something like that. And basically, it’s just a large tote and they basically made this into a worm composting system. So what we’re gonna do is go ahead and take off the top and show you how they turn the rubbermaid tote into.
A worm composting system. It’s very simple, there’s just a few things they added.Number one, they added a little spigot here and you might have to figure out how to make this spigot and find all the parts. And they attach that spigot inside here, basically a halfinch pvc pipe that they put a lot of holes in to let some of the liquid go through, and in the end they put over a little screen here. And this allows the liquids to drain out, because worms don’t like it too moist, but they don’t like it too dry either.They.
Just like it just right. So you may have to drain some liquids out the bottom, especially in a system like this. The other thing they’ve added is they’ve added three simple ventilation things here. And the ventilation things are kind of like the ones i show you earlier. This is the inside of it.Looks like that. They’re ventilations for houses. They have some screen on there so the bugs won’t be able to get in, and that’s what it looks like form this side. They have three of them one on each side and one in the front.And.
That’s just one very simple container that’ll allow you to keep some worms in your home underneath your sink or in your garage to that you can build your own compost.Another really good one, if you don’t want worms in your houseand i know some of the ladies out there might freak out about having worms in their house.Well, worms are really nice pets. You just need to feed them and they’re produce a lot of castings for you.Another one, if you don’t want to keep worms in your house, is this set up here. And actually.
They do education with kids in schools and this is the very system they use to teach kids about composting with worms in the garden. So this is an outdoor worm composting set up.This is actually the marin soil solutions’ worm bucket, and it says right here add worms and bedding.Put in your household kitchen waste and bury the bucket in your backyard. The worms will move amongst the soil and help aerate and spread nutrients. They sell this for thirtyfive bucks. And all this is, it’s a very simple device. It’s a five gallon.
Bucketi have a good episode on reusing five gallon buckets and this is actually a use that i didn’t cover.Excellent use right here. You take a five gallon bucket and you just drill a bunch of holes in it.Looks like they got a bunch of, i don’t know, maybe halfinch holes on the side.In the bottom, you drill a couple large holes here. These are maybe, i don’t know, one and a half inch wide holes. And they put a very simple screen on the bottom and that’s so the food scraps actually don’t go through the bottom,.
But it will allow the worms to come in.What you’re gonna do then is build a big hole, and you’re gonna bury this bucket below the soil line.So the soil line is at my hand now. This is all below grade, and then you could put your little roof on it, and in the roof, once again there’s also a place for aeration and there’s also one of those vent things they like so much here. The vent thing are very handy, i’ll have to check those out.I’ve never really seen them before. They put a vent in the roof there.
And that just goes on the top.So once again, this is below grade. It’s filled with bedding, and the food scraps. So the bedding could be coconut core or something like shredded newspaper’s a great bedding.Fill this up with shredded newspaper and food scraps, bury it, and what’ll happen is this is basically like a bird feeder for the worms. The worms are hopefully in your ground. They’ll actually come inside through the wholes, either on the side or on the bottom, and actually eat all the stuff inside the bucket. Then they’ll.
Actually leave and they’ll leave you a whole bunch of worm castings in here and they’ll spread that out into your garden. You can also at any time open up the top and just throw an apple core in there or throw banana peels, throw juicer pulp in there. And this is a great way to compost outside of your house with some worms to make some of that rich and viable worm castings. But if you don’t want to do that, don’t worry about it.Marin soil solutions will provide you some of the best vermicompost.
In the whole area.So next let’s take a look at that stuff.I always recommend you guys make your own worm castings and make your own compost instead of buying it, but not everybody’s a doityourselfer like me and many of you guys out there. So they offer some of the best vermicompost around. And what is vermicompost what’s vermicompost verse castings well castings, there’s literally a hundred percent worm poop, and the vermicompost is basically castings mixed in with compost. So this is more of a complete solution.Because.
In nature, there wouldn’t just be a hundred percent worm castings. So that’s why you’re supposed to mix worm castings with your compost. So what they have here is they have big totes. They get this stuff in bulk and have pass the savings on to you guys, and here it is right here. This is the vermicompost.Nice mixture here.Man, this is really dark and rich. One of the main things i always encourage you guys is to actually smell the compost orwow, and this has a really nice, deep, earthy smell and that’s the smell you’re.
Looking for.You don’t want it to be rancid or nasty smelling. You want it nice and earthy like you’re in the forest floor. We got the forest humice rotting on the ground. That’s another thing to do.Go out to the forest and dig up some of your own compost from the forest. That might be illegal nowadays. But anyways, if you don’t want to do that, just come here and you can get this stuff.Today, they’re going to give me a little sample bag here. One of the things, they actually bag this up in environmentally friendly bags,.
So they use these juke bags. They have a certain size. They also reuse old burlap sacks from coffee as well to fill up.So definitely like this stuff a lot. Now, besides the worm castings and adding compost to your soil, another very important way to build your soil is through the biologics. And that’s what they’re doing here. They’re specifically brewing biologics in something likebehind methe compost tea systems. So what we’re gonna do next is talk about the soil biologics and why they’re so important to have in your garden.Let’s talk about the biologics of your soil.
And that’s one of the foundations this whole company was founded on.I mean, it was founded on the soil food web book, or teaming with microbes, and that’s what we’re look that in this little post they have primly places in the office here. It’s called the soil food web.And if you have been following my tutorials for a while, i have a really good episode that we talk about this more specifically, but i’ll go over the basics with you.One of the main components that’s missing in most people’s gardens are the biologics,.
Or basically the active elements. The life in the soil! you want toall life on earth comes from life.It doesn’t come from things that are not alive, and when you use things like chemical fertilizers and things like that, that maybe kills the soil or inactivated a lot of the soil biologics in the soil so it’s not gonna be quite active. And it’s literally like feeding your plants drugs and us living on little vitamin pills, when we know we should be living on real foods and that’s what we want to provide the soil,.
The biologics. We have beneficial microflora in our intestines. Some people say there’s a pound or a couple pound of bacteria in each one of us in our stomachs. And if you go down to the local health foods store and get some probiotics, those are predigesters of food. And those are the things that are required in the soil for the plants to start predigesting some of the food so the plants can uptake that food more effectively. And that’s what’s missing in today’s world. And so that what it goes over in this chart here.It has organic matter is pretty much the base of the soil.
Food web. Then you have the bacteria and most compost is a bacterial based compost. Then you have things like the fungi and the fungi may be an important component that you may be missing in your garden. That’s why they actually brew some of the teas here, to get some of the bacteria, but more importantly the fungi back into your soil.I wish they had fungirls but they only got funguys.I think i like fungirls better.Besides the fungi, they also have the other critters that are very important, just as.
The protozoa and the nematodes, which basically break down the bacteria and the fungithey don’t break down fungirlsto make that more available for the plant, so they can absorb it.So that’s really important.Next, what we’re going to do is we’re going to take a look at a picture they have that shows about some of these bacteria, fungi, and even some of the nematodes and other things that should be alive in your soil, but may not be.Another poster they have here is this poster of microorganisms. And this is found in soil, compost castings, and compost teas. And some.
Of the benefits of the microorganisms are outcompete pathogens, provide protection, improve soil structure, retain nutrients, cycle nutrients, improve plant growth, decrease water use, produce hormones, and improve food quality. So this poster contains thirtyfour pictures and each one is something a little bit different. There’s things like bacteria, algae’s, lactobacilli’s, which is why sauer kraut will ferment.Fungal hyphae, which actually may be not present in your garden.Mycorrhizae, which i recommend you guys use mycorrhizae and some of the other funguses to actually help colonize root systems.Amoebas, ciliates, nematodes. Here’s a rotaphor.Rotaphor’s like a vacuum cleaner that basically.
Sucks in things and it eats it all and it poops out stuff your plants can absorb.I mean, there’s all these different things that should be in your soil, but if you’re using chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides and things like that, they’re probably not in your soil.So building up your basic reserves of some of these microorganisms is very critical. How can you do that number one, in my opinion, is to do the notill method. What is the no till method that means you don’t want to.
Be disturbing your soil. Some of these things like the fungal hyphaes, they’re literally like little strings and if a shovel starts shoveling through, you’re gonna break these guys up and it’s gonna disturb them and then they’re gonna have to rebuild from scratch, and that’s a lot of work.So don’t disturb your soil, unless absolutely necessary. So every year, i don’t till my soil, i don’t use any rotor tillerif you have a rotor tiller, sell it on craigslist and get some money for it and put that money to some of.
The products they sell here, which we’ll go over in a minute. But sell that rotor tiller and just don’t till your soil.I don’t till my soil.Obviously, you gotta dig some stuff up if you’re doing transplants and stuff, but in general, i don’t disturb my soil.I pile on new soil on top to basically fill my raised beds every season, and that’s the best way to encourage some of the microorganisms to proliferate in your soil. But besides proliferating, you them to get in there in the first place, because if they’re not there in the first.
Place, they’re not just gonna out of thin air and just start colonizing your soils. So the ways you can do that is, number one, the compost teas.So let’s go ahead and show you guys the compost tea brewers and talk about that a little bit. This is their huge compost tea system, where they’re normally brewing some compost tea. This thing is likehuge. It’s made by growing solutions inc., and what they do here is actually they proliferate the beneficial microbes and bacteria and fungi so that you can get them in your garden. You can foliar feed these guys. You can spray them into your.
Soil to get these guys in there.Once you guys got the guys in there, then you can actually encourage them to grow more and proliferate just like humans are now taking over the world! because we’re spreading out, dividing, and conquering. But the beneficial bacteria and the fungi can also do that but you need to get them there in the first place. So you know, inoculating your garden with something like the compost tea they provide here is definitely an essential ingredient to growing a good garden. So i know you guys might be thinking john! i already make my own compost tea! well.
That’s great! but what i always want to say is that not all compost teas are create equally. The compost teas based on the starting compost you’re using, and the compost tea that you make may not have the wide spectrum of the beneficial microbes in there that you need. And so here they sent out their compost tea to get tested regularly to make sure it’s a high quality compost tea and it has all the different microorganisms you need. They also do put it on slides here and they put it up on the tv and they’ll look through.
The microscope here to see all the active organisms to make sure you’re getting the best compost tea as possible. The other thing that’s very important about compost tea is use it before you lose it.If you make your own compost tea, it’s very importantwhether you’re buying or getting it from a place that brewing their own and testing it, which is very important because a lot of places will just brew their own compost teas, but they may not even know what’s in it because they’re not actually looking.
Through a microscope.I mean, that’s a good question to ask a lot of places do you get your compost tea tested can you show me what it looks like on the screen and they can definitely do that for you here and they’ll explain all the different things in your compost tea and they might even put you to sleep. But they’re really into the soil science here and that’s why they have a thing like the microscope. So not all compost teas are created equal and you want to use it before you lose it.You want to use your.
Compost teas within six to eight hours. So don’t get a bottle or buy it somewhere else or make your own and cap it off and store it.You want to take it and immediately pour it in your garden or foliar feed it on to get the best results.Aside from providing you the biologics to feed your soil, they also do have some organic fertilizers that are gonna increase the biologics in your soil and not kill them like conventional chemical fertilizers will. They got things like alfalfa meal, of course the green sand,.
Azomite, which we’ll talk more about in a minute.Kelp meal, feather meal, bone meal, fish meal, blood meal, kelp meal.Bat guano. And eventhey got a vegan mix here so if you want to grow veganically, they got the vegan mix so that you can do just that.So i think it’s amazing that they have all these natural fertilizers to increase the quality of your soil, because that’s all what it’s about. It’s about increasing and building your soil. The main reason why i found this place, because one of my viewers, like i said, notified me or told me of this place, and they said john!.
This place has azomite! so that’s the number one reason why i’m here.So next, what i’m gonna do is we’re gonna sit on the stack of azomite and share with you guys more about the rock dust and the azomite that you should be using in your garden, because it’ll literally supercharge your plant growth. But definitely saved the best for last, and besides all the other products and the biologics they have here, one of the best items that you can use in your garden, if you’re just gonna buy one thing here, you want to start.
With this guy.Because this guy feeds the beneficial microorganisms in your garden to make these things more bioavailable for your plants. And what this stuff is is called the azomite. And this is a to z of minerals! and these are trace minerals, and i know many people out there may be thinking john! i got minerals in my soil! well, yes, you have minerals, but there’s been massive top soil degradation and destruction.I mean, ever hear of the dust bowl happened in the midwest where the top soils just eroded away.Well, the trace mineral, in my opinion, are.
One of the key nutrients in the soil that’s missing probably out of your garden. And so it’s very important to get these trace minerals back in.They have countless testimonials of people that have done nothing else but get on the trace minerals to add to their garden and start getting excellent results. For example, i was told just today an orange tree that was on its way out, wasn’t looking healthy, wasn’t producingand all they did was add some azomite and some fertilizer and it just started producing again and now.
It looks beautiful. There’s countless testimonials for this stuff, so you really want to get on some of the rock duct powders, the azomites, or other rock dusts and other trace mineral supplementation to bring that back into your soil. The best news that i have today is that this place here is currently selling it for twentyfive dollars and thirty cents a bag, and it’s the cheapest, lowest cost that i’ve found in the marin county and the san francisco area.So now you don’t have to drive as far to get some good priced azomite so you can start using this in your garden.This.
Is a forty pound bag.And this is the micronized version. This is the version that i recommend the most. They do have a granular version that will break down, but the smaller the particle size, the better it is absorbed by the beneficial microorganisms in your soil.I mean, this is the one thing that i swear by.It’ll make your food taste better, because now your food will have the trace minerals in it, you’ll get the trace minerals. You’ll be healthier.Your plants will be healthier. And they’ll be more resistant to diseases.

Are going to be made out of these shippi containers.Right now, these five lots at the corner of south shel street and ash street are empty, but this is what the developers envision.Eight to nine container home 640 square feet each, with rooftop decks.Gtgt the plan originated, we actually saw a container bar in austin, texas.Christina rick kueber bought the land and wants to be part of germantown’s future. From a design standpoint, we are on the corner, so we have dividend of both streets. We have to fit into both.
Streets.Christina it would be a first for the city of louisville taking shipping containers and turning them into home sweet home.Gtgt a lot of people want to put them in the tiny category.I would not say they are that small, but it is certainly part of the minimalist movement.Christina the potential development is right behind germantown mill lofts and part of the schnitzelburg community. For each home, builders would use shipping containers that are eight feet by 20 feet and pu them side by side, and then add.
Building the twobucket cyclone
I call this cyclone my 2bucket cyclone because it collects the sawdust into a bucket. And its made of another bucket. This lid is gonna fit on this cutoff bucket. And i want to create a ledge on here so it just fits inside there for a good seal.Almost fits.Just a tiny bit less. That’s a satisfying fit. Here’s my actual thienbaffle part of it.And that is gonna get screwed into the sides right about here.Have to make sure all the holes are gonna be at the same level.
And that way the baffle is gonna end up in the same level spot.Next i need to mug this piece of pipe on here for injecting the air into here and spin it around. And that shape is a bit tricky to get so i drew this one up in cad.The sides of the bucket are just a little bit conical. So, to make this mount fit properly i tilted the table by 1.8 degrees so that, when i cut this out this circle will make a conical section.
I added some bits of plywood here and here just to make sure this isn’t gonna crack over time. Now i did use one of these drill press circle cutters to cut that hole.If you don’t have one you should really get one.But if you don’t want to get one, you can just make a piece of plywood to fit on here. And make the pipe fit into that.I need to make sure this ring doesn’t slide up and down.Especially once i put a vacuum on there. And the logical thing to do.
Would be just to put some screws in from the inside. But i’m experimenting with using a soldering iron to melt some of this plastic together and that seems to have some limited success.I haven’t got a perfect joint in here.I’m just using some caulking to seal that up.Next i gotta mount this on here and the part is where does the hole go.This bucket is a little bit translucent so just by shining the light through here i can tell roughly where it lines out. With my innut so far above the baffle i figure its best to.
Move the inlet a little bit back from this part here because when air shoots out here its really not gonna get all the way down here. So, having placed this i can now start mounting it.And i’ll just start by drilling a hole in here for the first screw.Ok, and before i drill any other holes i’m gonna put a screw in here to make sure nothing slides around.I’m gonna put just a little bit of caulking on here.Just to make sure i get a good seal.
It’s tempting to use just felt for a gasket. But the felt gets caught on the screws when you tighten them so that always makes a real mess. This is tighter than i was aiming for. But, if i can get it in there i won’t have to worry about making a seal. That’s for sure. And then this little tube, here is for extending into a chamber which will, hopefully make the cyclone work a little bit better. These shop vac hose connectors are just a little bit too small.
For a 2 inch pipe fitting here.I could go to one and a half inch and just pad that out with electrical tape but i want to have this as big as possible. So, looking around i found this thread coupling adapter and with the threads filed off of it that just barely fits in here. That shop vac hose is just too small.Keeps plugging up all the time.Well, the idea of attaching it with a soldering iron didn’t work out so well.It let go.There’s just too much suction.
So, i’m back to attaching that bucket reel with the screws. For my next test i brush out the filter from my shop vac.Wash the insides of it.And i’m gonna use fine saw dust from my band saw.So, the bucket with the sawdust weighs 1830 grams. And this time i’m using a much more manly two inch hose. The backlight sure makes the cyclone look cooler. Now i just need to get that dust back into this bucket. And i’ll just do that by sucking it all through again.
So, let’s see.I can’t really tell if this is any dirtier. And in here. There is a little bit of dust in here. This used to be scrubbed clean so we definitely lost some.Let’s see how we’re doing.1824.So we lost 6 grams of dust. With the bucket weighing 1043 grams empty.I work it out that the cyclone is 99.2 efficient with this fine band saw dust. So, some of that dust no doubt got stuck in the filter. But another place where dust got stuck is the bottom of my cyclone.
Rumah Kontena V20 Container House
Hi how are you, my name is muhamad azree today i will show you around my house which is currently under construction for us to understand more about the concept that i will bring in this build come, let’s go walking sound alright everyone, we will now begin with the concept i am using 2 20 footer container on the lower floor with 2 40 footer container iso standard on the upper floor so.I will explain about the exterior first so on my right now is the area where it will serve as masterbedroom and a small library for my visitors.
So as the other side on my left there’s behind this staircase is the main kitchen which is kinda huge and basically the kitchen is connected with both containers let’s look around the kitchen walking sound so now we are in the main kitchen which is connected with both containers 1 and 2 doors as we can see and we have 2 different toilets behind the kitchen the 3rd and fourth toilets are located on the second floor come let’s explore the second floor.Climbing stair sound so now we are on the second floor, err, as you can see we are connecting both containers too.

How to Build a Raised Bed Garden with No Tools Choose the Best Soil
This is john kohler with growingyourgreens and i have a special announcement for you guys! until may 25th at midnight, i’m offering some tshirts for you guys, growing your greens official tshirts, limited time only.I don’t know if i’ll ever be back again because i’m not in the business of selling tshirts.I’m here to teach you guys about how to grow your own food. But anyways, you could help me out so that i could buy a farm with my girlfriend, and you guys get a tshirt at the same time.100 recycled, 100 made.
In america. They fit me great. That’s why i selected them.I’ve had this same brand tshirts for over 2 years now, and they wear really well and wash really well and don’t rip and all this other kind of stuff. They hold up really well. That’s why i’m offering them.Yeah, click over right here to get yours today! alright! this is john kohler with growingyourgreens! today we have another exciting episode for you.And i’m still visiting my girlfriend here. And something really cool happened. It’s going to benefit all you guys and everybody out there watching this tutorial, is my girlfriend’s.
Roommate, they live in a house here, wants to get a garden! so i said hey i’ll donate all my labor, you got to pay for the materials and i can make a tutorial to share with others how you guys could do it too! so literally i was dropped here and i don’t, i haven’t researched like places to get the compost and where to build the raised bed and all these different things. And so i’m going to make it happen in just two days. And today is the second day.Yesterday was the first day, the first day i, you know, did a lot.
Of research, went online, called places up, talked to them about soil and, and then, and then i figured out where i’m going to get the stuff. Then i drove around to where i’m going to buy the stuff.Bought the stuff, brought it all back and now we’re just going to go ahead and assemble it and set up this raised bed garden with no tools! because i don’t got no tools. So i want to show you guys that you guys can grow a garden without tools. Now we’re not going to set this garden up in the front yard.As you guys could see it’s.
A nicely manicured lawn with two nice trees, lots of shade. And, you know, shade is not necessarily the best place to set up a garden. They do have some side area that maybe doesn’t get the shade. But also, you know, many home owners associations nowadays have restrictions on what you can and can’t do in the front yard. And i think that really personally sucks.Don’t move into a place that has a hoa where you can’t, you know, plant what you guys want to plant. And if you already live there, then you’re going to do what i’m doing.
Today, is grow in the back yard. Also in many cases growing in the back yard’s a lot safer because you’re not going to have random people passing by stealing your crops. And also some of the exhaust fumes of the cars driving by, you know, getting on your plants, if you’re super paranoid.Anyways, for those and other reasons, we’re going to go ahead and grow the garden in the back yard today. It’s also a lot more convenient to get in and out from the kitchen. So yeah, let’s go and head into the back yard and show you guys the back yard. And share with.
You guys what we’re going to do and how easy it is to grow your own food at home.So now i’m in the back yard and it actually looks pretty huge on the tutorial, right.Well it’s as big as a foot ball field! well, maybe not quite. You could probably play some volleyball. It’s definitely big enough for a couple volleyball courts maybe and badminton courts.I don’t know if it’s big enough for soccer.Or baseball or anything like that. But it’s a really nice size back yard. And unfortunately this time it’s kind of, in.
My opinion, being wasted. There’s a lawn that she has to get the mower guy to come in and mow.And it really doesn’t serve her because she doesn’t have kids and all this kind of stuff. And yeah it’s not really doing much aside from just growing and maintenance. So why not do something better with the back yard than just grow grass why not grow food we all need to eat each and every day.And by growing some of your own food, that could reduce your food bill. But more importantly you’re making an investment in the most.
Important thing you guys have it’s your health! this is why i got into gardening. For my health. You know, at a young age i almost lost my life. The s told me when i was in the emergency room that john you might not make it out of here alive.I’m like well don’t you have a treatment for me he said no.And when you’re in that situation, life versus not life, you think long and hard about what’s important. Is it really important to go out and buy and make money and to buy a car and all this kind.
Of stuff you know even if i had a million dollars, i couldn’t pay the off a million dollars to get me better.I mean, rich people lose their lives all the time despite having all the money in the world.Because, you know, in some cases medicine is really good but in other cases it’s not so good. And so i want you guys to put your money into your health. The number one way to do that, in my opinion, is to grow some of the highest quality food that you’re now able to grow at home.So that simply is.
What she’s going to do here. And so i met with her yesterday, and her goal is actually to turn this whole back yard into a food producing farm, which i think is great. And, you know, we talked about like she wants to get maybe fruit trees along the edges of the yard. And i’m like okay, well kinda doing the math and how much it costs, like fruit trees, depending on where you get them they could run from like $20 on unto $100 each. But i kind of.
Figured $20 to $40 for small ones. And then, you know, some good soil. And so to do her whole yard and fruit trees, i don’t know man, like a 1000 bucks or something like that.So i’m like yeah, that kind of gets expensive but that’s i mean like 20 fruit trees. And over the years that’s going to pay for themselves in the amount of fruit.Have you guys priced like ripe figs lately man they’re like 5 or 6 dollars a pound. And then they’re not even that good because they’re picked too early, right when you guys grow your.
Own stuff, you get to choose when you want to harvest it.So anyways, so then she talked about getting raised beds. And i talked about making a site plan and a map of like every square inch and how she could pack raised beds in here and all this kind of stuff. And i don’t know, it’s, she wants to do a lot, right. And i’m like well, i’m only here for a couple more days so i can’t really do much. But why don’t we do this, why don’t we start out with like one or two raised bed gardens.
To get you started, to get you growing, to get your feet wet literally.I mean, she works all the time, she doesn’t have a lot of time to dedicate, you know, to gardening. She doesn’t want to be out here all the time. And even if you’re one of those people that, you know are working all the time and are busy with other things, you know, you don’t have to put a lot of time into gardening. She literally puts in no time in this back yard and the grass still grows. What’s the difference about growing some different kinds.
Of plants besides grass some of the stuff actually we’re growing is grass! not that kind of grass. But, but yeah provided you set it up properly, a garden could grow without you.Look at nature all around us! there’s all these trees and all these things and things grow out in the forest, right there’s no humans involved with that.Nature’s involved. It rains, you know, the sun comes out, things grow! so, you know, you are your biggest enemy when it comes to gardening because you could get in the way, you could overwater, you.
Could underwater, you know. And you could have maybe not the best soil and you could do all these things to screw up.So what i want to show you guys in this tutorial is like a good solid way you could grow a garden and hopefully be successful. And these are just practices that i use in my garden and i teach on youtube. So if you’re interested in learning more about gardening besides this one tutorial, be sure to check my other tutorials.I have over 1100 tutorials showing you guys all.
Aspects on how to grow your own food.I have tutorials where i set up my personal, you know, tract home with a garden in the front yard and in the back yard, and doing the different methods. And i’ve gone over to different friend’s houses and set them up with gardens and i haven’t done one of these in a while where i set somebody up with a garden to show you guys what i would do if i was dropped somewhere and i don’t know the area, i don’t.
Know what’s available. And that’s what this is about. So anyways, we’re going to go ahead and start with 2 small raised beds, probably actually right where the camera is.It’s kind of like a shadier spot. The back yard gets really good full sun.So this is really excellent for growing most things. But what she wants to start off with are low maintenance crops because she doesn’t have a lot of time.So i said well, hey, that’s easy. The easiest low maintenance crop are herbs.Herbs pretty much just kind of grow,.
Most of them are perennial they grow year round, you don’t have to do much to them, without much input from you! and so we’re going to start an herb garden that basically gets full sun and then some afternoon shade, which i think will be a good thing because some herbs don’t like to bake in the full sun, specially when you’re growing some of the ones that are maybe more meant to grow in the fallwinter time and they don’t like, you know, the hot humid summers here.So i guess, in any case let’s go ahead and sit down and show you guys all the supplies.
I bought, where i bought them, how much they cost, yada yada yada, so that you guys could model this and do it yourself too.And before we sit down, i want to let you guys know personally, you know, i get a lot of enquiries all the time john, can i pay you to come out and put in my garden’ and all this kind of stuff. And that’s not what i do.No, i don’t do that! i don’t put in gardens! you’re thinking, john, you’re putting one in.
Today!’.Well, that’s because this my girlfriend. You know, where my girlfriend lives and i want my girlfriend to have a garden, and my girlfriend’s room mate to have a garden, and i want to make a tutorial for you guys to show you guys because i don’t want to do things for you guys, right. You know, feed a man a fish, feed him for a day teach him how to fish, feed him for his lifetime.I want to show you guys how to grow your own garden! i’m sharing with you guys how to exactly do it so you guys could it yourself.
And it takes a little bit of muscle labor to lift some bags up, you know. You know, compost bags and haul them in your car and bring them home and to set it up.But it’s really easy, you guys could do it! and i’m here to help! don’t tell home depot, i’m using their logo.Anyways, let’s go ahead and sit down and show you guys what i got.So now i’m going to go ahead and share with you guys what i went out and bought yesterday and where i bought them here in this area.So the first step is i researched the soil.
The soil is potentially where you can save the most money if you go to like a soil yard and you buy bulk soil.So if you got a pick up truck they could take, you know, a cubic yard and dump it in your pickup truck, you could drive it home. You’ll be done, in this area, depending on the cubic yard of soil that you’re getting, a standard compost style mixture would run $40 to $50 a cubic yard for like a raised bed mixture, it’s going to run you $120 a yard if you want to get, you know, fairly good stuff.Of course,.
Different soil yards are going to tell you oh you could get this stuff, that’s whats people use.But it may not be the stuff that i would use, you know.My preference would be to buy stuff, you know, from the soil yard. And then like buy additional things to put in it to make my own custom blend. That way you’re saving the most money but then getting the exact blend you want instead of buying a premixed blend. Now of course, if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, i do recommend you guys buy a premix blend made for raised.
Bed gardening. So yeah, basically i called the soil yard that i liked the most, and they said that you could buy a yard there and then you could bag it up yourself so you could get the yard price but then bag it, so you could carry it in a car.And they said you could only do that on saturdays. And so i got to be out of here before saturday. Not going to be able to do that. And so i ended up buying the bag soil mix, which is not my.
First choice.I don’t necessarily recommend that for you guys. But for some people, if you don’t got a truck it’s like your only choice. So that’s what you’re going to have to do.And then i recommend you guys shop around like i did to get some of the best stuff. So the first stop i made was, actually to get the soil, was at this place called the bright ideas hydroponics in austin. And there we got this stuff. This is the premium compost soil mender soil mix.Premium blend of composted cotton burs and organic top soil, natural.
Organic. And it says inoculated with beneficial microbes. So this is a really nice blend there.Mostly compost with some soil. And so this is kind of like the cheap filler i’m using to get something, you know, at least some compost in there and some top soil to mix in with my raised bed mixture. The base mixture that i like to use in general that i’m deviating a little bit from is 1231 raised bed mixture. So it’s a one third of the mixture is compost, one third of the mixture is the coconut coir or the peat moss and one third.
Is the vermiculite. So i’m trying to model that by buying premixed up in bags because my budget was kind of small and i kind of need to fit a lot in in the budget. So each of these soil mender bags were only $3.They gave me a 2 for 1 deal on it so that was really cool. And i got one, two , three, four, five, six, seven of them. And then next we got this guy right here.We got one, two, three, four, five, six of these bags.And.
This is called the sustainable organic triple power compost from gosh organics, organics by gosh, and they’re another local company you could actually, this is a soil yard i was going to go to but unless you have a truck you can’t bag it yourself. It’s more expensive to buy by the bag. This is a one cubit foot bag.The last one was maybe 1.5 cubic feet. And this bag was $4.So this includes a blend of vegetable and fruit matter that’s been turned into compost along with yard waste, along probably with some manure as well.And.
This is sustainable organic. Now one of the things i want to tell you guys about is all the products that say they say organic on the label, and unlike if you buy something with usd organic on produce, which actually there is a legal definition, there’s no really legal definition of organic on a label. So you always should flip the bag and read the ingredients that are in there or minimally call the company so you guys know.Since there’s really no labeling laws.As long as it’s from nature, it’s considered organic in.
Terms of soil blends.Another thing i like to look for often times is omri.If it says omri, that means it’s, it can be used for growing organic produce which is a higher standard in my opinion than just saying organic on the label.Because people are now, you know, unfortunately abusing the term.We got one, two, three, four, five, six of these. These guys were $4 each. The next mixture i got was this guy. This is probably the main mixture i’m going to rely on this time. And this is by kellogg’s organics. And this is their new all natural.
Raised bed potting mix.And i got this because i have used the kellogg’s brand before, sometimes with varying results. So hopefully this is good stuff. And also, once again, i had a budget that i needed to conform to and this is one of the lowest cost raised bed mixtures that i’d actually trust. And so let’s go ahead and read off the ingredients on here.Oh so these guys were $10 each for 2 cubic feet.So that’s like $5 a cubic foot.So that’s only a dollar more than the stuff next to it.And this has a lot of.
Ingredients in there. So it’s really cool and it’s regionally formulated and in texas. This product contains recycled forest products, coconut coir, composted poultry manure, organic fertilizer see below, horticulture perlite, sand, sphagnum peat moss, worm castings, bat guano, ground dolomitic limestone as a ph adjustor, and kelp meal. And the fertilizer is from composted poultry manure dehydrated poultry manure, feather meal, bat guano, kelp meal, and worm castings. So this is a pretty good mix according to the bag.But i haven’t yet opened the bag up because what’s really important to me is actually what the soil mixture on the inside.
Of the bag looks like.I don’t want to see a lot of like sawdust or big wood type chips, you know.I like to see something like really broken down. And unfortunately most bagged products that you’ll buy in the store are not as broken down as i would like to see them. But, you know, we got to do what we can with the money we got and the time constraints that i had too.I had to get this together, as i said, in two days.So i bought a few.
Extras, you know.I had to kind of like maybe stretch the budget a little bit outside the budget because i really want to include some of these important things in for the garden, for the health of the crops and for the people that will be eating the crops. And also because i believe they are very important and keys to my natural organic biologic gardening style. You know, a lot of people think that teach organic gardening and they’ll say oh just use some manure, you know, and that will fertilize your crops. And, you know, while manure has,.
You know, certain levels of certain nutrients, you know, i think it can be missing in other regards and be deficient in other regards. And i’m not saying don’t use manures. Some of these, you know, bag fertilizer products have some manure but most of the bases of the compost that i’m using are from plants. And this is what, directly from plants, not indirectly from plants.Because when you’re getting manures, you know, you don’t know what’s in that manure. Were the chickens fed, you know, arsenic, high arsenic containing.
Grain, that now the arsenic is in the chicken. So if it stays in the chicken so when you eat the chicken you get arsenic. And then when it comes out of the chicken in it’s eggs or it’s poop, you know, now that compost also has arsenic in there.Could have heavy metal contamination.Could have things like antibiotics in there that’s ending up in the compost.Or bad bacteria even.So i really don’t want to like mess around with that.I’d rather use a plant based compost, fruit and vegetable scraps and wood chips composted,.
You know. That’s one of my favorite along with other select nutrients as i’m going to show you guys.So the first one that’s really important to me that i got as a kind of an extra. This is kind of like blew the budget as you guys saw. This stuff was 4 bucks, this stuff was 3 bucks, this stuff was 10 bucks but it’s like ends up $5 per cubic foot. This bag is 30 pounds and it was like 25 bucks. So it’s less than a dollar per pound i believe approximately.
And this is the wiggle worms soil builder earthworm castings. So the earthworm castings are probably one of my favorite fertilizers in the whole world.Even though like the numbers on it if it has it says 100 , which means oh man that doesn’t have a lot of nutrients in there, you know. The thing is i’m not getting necessarily the worm castings for the npk ratios because they are quite low.Why i’m getting the worm castings is for the biologic activity. These are the beneficial microbes like the beneficial fungi and bacteria.
And other things that are living in the soil that basically convert all the organic matter that’s in all the products i just showed you guys.It slowly breaks that down and the bacterial action, the fungal action, all the microbes and all the food soil creatures break down the organic matter and turn that into water soluble nutrients for the plants.Instead of adding the water soluble nutrients in the first place like miracle gro, that’s subverts the whole system of growing naturally. And, you know, i’m not going to say, i will say.
That one way in my opinion is better than the other, growing a natural biologic method. And i think in many cases, even organic gardening, sometimes the biology may be forgotten. But one of the reasons why i got this stuff, it says inoculated with beneficial microbes. So they don’t list exactly what’s on there. So hopefully they inoculate it with the beneficial fungi as well as the bacteria. But i know hopefully i’m going to be getting some in these earthworm castings. And not all earthworm castings are created equal, you know.The.
Earthworm castings are only as good as what the worms are being fed, right. And the best foods that i have determined to feed worms are number one, things high in chitin. So like crab meal, shrimp meal, nails, hair. Also things like cardboard. And then as well as, you know, food scraps that have been even precomposted. That would be really excellent to feed worms. And i mean, you could buy worm castings or you could set up bins to have your own worms. You could have worms in your garden beds that are making worm castings.
In place so that you don’t have to buy them if you don’t want to.Another thing i will say is, you know, i bought all this bagged soil. This is the majority of the purchase, you know, investments here, probably over maybe half of the money went to buying the highest quality and best soil i can.And i, if you don’t remember anything else from this tutorial, put your money in the soil, most important thing. You could have a nice expensive raised bed and buy the cheapest soil and then your garden’s not going to.
Grow well, right.I went around trying to get the highest quality stuff and i’ll cross my fingers because i’ve never experienced some of these products before.Hopefully they’ll be alright, right. So yeah, worm castings, very important. It’s an extra kind of thing that i added in to add the biology. Now besides just the biology, another thing that’s critical to my gardening style is this stuff right here. And this stuff is a heavy bag. It’s like a 40 pound bag. This was also around $25.And this is called the soil mender minerals plus.So this has lava.
Sand, granite sand, basalt, soft rock phosphate with colloidal clay, humates, and montmorillonites. And basically all these things are ground up rocks, and a varying kinds of ground up rocks. And what these ground up rocks do is they add the trace mineral component to the soil. And when you add the trace mineral component along with the organic matter component, along with the bacterial component, now you have the trifecta or triad of things you need to have a healthy gardening system. And in most cases, people might have the compost and organic.
Matter and that’s great. And the compost and organic matter does come with some biology in there, as long as you got some good stuff. We’re going to make sure we add the extra biology and also the compost and organic matter will have some trace minerals in there. But they might not have the wide spectrum of trace minerals from a blend of different kinds of rock dust powders or rock dusts, you know, whatever you want to call it.And this is providing up to 70 different trace minerals in the soil. This is something that is lacking.
Today in conventional farming, you know, conventional farming they deal with 3 numbers npk primarily and they may add up to 16 different minerals.I don’t want to do conventional farming.I don’t want to have the quality of produce they have, which is actually pretty crappy in my opinion. You know, i want to have high quality food.So i want to give the plant what it needs and, you know, and put it in there and let the plants and the microbes and all of them figure it out.But if it’s not in your soil, if it’s not getting in.
There, then your plants aren’t going to be able to absorb it.And i know some of you guys out there, well, john, man i compost leaves. My leaves have all the minerals in there.’.Well, you know, here’s the thing.Wherever your tree grew or the grass grew or the produce that you’re composting grew, in that soil there’s certain different trace minerals in there, right every different geologic rock deposit has different levels of different minerals. Some geologic deposits are, you know, have a lot of certain minerals but low in others, right and if you’re using the trees, the leaves off your trees.
And it only has certain minerals in the soil, it’s not going to be in, you know, the compost you’re making out of the leaves. So that’s why i like to ensure i have the minerals by buying stuff like the rock dust, you know, to get a wide spectrum of different trace minerals in there. So yeah, the rock dust, very important.Yeah that was, that probably put me over the budget, these two things alone.Let’s see, and next what we got is we got the plants! so these guys as i said, brite.
Ideas hydroponics, this guy and this guy were purchased actually at home depot. And then all these plants, while you could purchase plants like at home depot or lowe’s which is good for one reason but not good for others, i went to a place called the natural gardener in austin and i got the plants, all the plants pretty much, the herbs were like $2.29 each. And i got a few nonherbs like a tomato and some malabar spinach, they’re $1.69 each. That’s a decent price, you know, not a super good price but a decent price, you know, definitely.
Less than the home depot big box store. And these plants all look like they’re growing pretty well and healthy. And the, the thing about the natural gardener is that they have a wide selection. So, you know, they have like at least a dozen kinds of different basils and i chose some of my favorite ones that i’ll share with you guys in a little bit.And they have like i don’t know, 20 different kinds of rosemaries. So you could grow different varieties of rosemary. They each grow different, you know, taste a little bit different, look.
A little different and all that stuff. So i really like local garden centers and to support them whenever i can. These 20 plants were approximately $48.So about $50 for all these plants that we’ll be planting out, which we’ll go over in a little bit.But i mainly got herbs, right. As i said herbs are probably one of the easiest things to grow, specially, you know, if you don’t have a lot of time to maintain your garden. Now while i’m still talking about the plants, one of the benefits of buying your plants.
If you just go to a big box like lowe’s or home depot is they are probably the bonnie brand of plants. They are quite expensive, you know, for a small pot if they’re not on sale they’re around $3.50 or so.And so that could run your bill up really fast, really quickly. But the benefit is if you buy your plants at home depot or lowe’s, save your receipt, they have a one year plant guarantee. So if you buy bad soil, your plants don’t make it, or you forget to water, it’s too hot, whatever the reason you save your.
Receipt, your plants don’t make it, you dig them up, you put them back in the container save that upc code so they could scan it in easy.Take them back with your receipt, they’ll give you a basically credit back to get more plants for free , you know.So that’s really cool.So even if you mess up, you’re going to be able to grow something within a year pretty much guaranteed. On these guys, you buy them, you own them. It’s kind of like if you go into a chinese.
Store it’s like you break, you buy! right you buy them.Once you take them out of the property man, you own them. And if you break it up, they’re not responsible. So i kind of like that they have the plant guaranteed. If you guys live out west, lucky enough to live out west at osh, orchard supply hardware, they have a forever plant guarantee there. So that i really respect a lot and yeah support osh if you’re in their neighborhood.Alight, next few items i got.Alright, so this, this whole project wouldn’t have came.
Together if i did not get this next item here. This is critical because as i said in the title, i have no tools to make this garden happen, no drills, no hammers, no screwdrivers, nothing like that, right. And so it’s like, man, john, how can you make a raised bed with no tools , right because i know some of you guys don’t have you tools and maybe you guys aren’t handy.I mean, to build a raised bed is super simple. You get a couple pieces of wood, nail them together, i don’t necessarily recommend that, or screw.
Them together, and you’re done.Super simple, super easy. But i found something even easier on craigslist here. And what it is are these guys right here. You’re like, john, that’s just some pieces of wood, man. What are you talking about well, it’s, well these these are some pieces of wood but what this is, this is basically a compact raised bed.And if we go ahead and maybe we’ll move this couple bags of these aside to show you guys how these work.I saw these on craigslist and i’m like wow, man, that’s ingenious!.
This is such a good idea and they’re very cost effective. And so you’re going to be floored when you find out how much the wood cost me to make the raised bed.So this is how these raised beds work here.Basically, you just go like this, you just fold them out and look at that! instant raised bed garden. They got the sides, they got these all hinged looks like a galvanized metal on there.Like 8 inches like deep, about 1 inch wide, i think it’s like about, maybe about 4 feet by 32 inches. So that’s like approximately.
A little bit less than 3 feet by 4 feet.Fill this up with some dirt and we’re going to be all set.And because it has these special little things on here, these stacks, so we’re going to go two high and it’s going to be a nice little raised bed garden. Now the amazing thing is these guys, guess how much one bed cost me $10.$10! amazing! this is the best price for a raised bed i ever got.I wish i would have found these near me instead of.
Getting the cheap plastic ones, circular ones that i found.I really like these a lot.No tools required.Buy it, set it down, fill your dirt up and you’re done. And that’s what we’re going to simply do in just a little bit.But yeah, check craigslist always for free resources.Whether you could find some free bricks to line them up and, you know, mortar them or just place them in place and fill it up with dirt, some free logs, some free wood. You could build some stuff out of somebody’s.
Taken down their old fence.Fence boards make a great raised bed garden. That’s how i made my first garden.I bought 2, 3 pallets of cedar fence boards for on clearance. And we built my garden out of those. They’re not going to last the longest time. But hey, they’ll work and hold dirt. And these are only made out of pine. And i’m not going to be treating these because that would be additional cost, additional expense. And we don’t have it in the budget. But this is, well as i said, this is a great way to get,.
You know, get them gardening here and get them started. And it holds dirt and it will probably last at least a couple, couple three years, you know, without a problem. Now for those of you guys that are wondering, john, what are these guys from, man where do i find these if i can’t find them on my local craigslist, right so these are ingenious. What this is, if you guys know your pallet sizes. This is pretty much the size of a pallet as they get shipped around the whole world, right and how these come.
Is they come stacked.Kind of like that and kind of like my girlfriend. But they come stacked like this and they basically stack these and nest them up.Let me go ahead and see if i could nest another one up for you guys. They come nested up.And basically they protect the contents on the inside. So instead of using paper, instead of using plastic wrap when they wrap up the pallets, they’re just simply using these guys. And that’s just how it stacks up like that really simply, really easily. These guys are from germany.
So, you know, i take it and, you know, like that the germans and many european countries now are thinking more about the, the total life cycle or energy cycle of the products they’re producing. So for example, you know, when they produce products like, you know, sending over a pallet or something, they could put plastic on it but then what’s going to happen to that plastic at the end of it’s life after it’s used they take it off the pallet and then it’s basically just thrown in the landfill and it just sits there.And.
That costs money, not to necessarily the companies but to the environment. What is the environmental cost so by this way using trees, yeah it may cost them some more money but the environmental cost at the end of the life is that this wood breaks down to feed the soil. And yeah, i mean, there’s some metal in it but hey that’s a lot better than having plastic. The metal could be taken off and then melted down and then reused whereas plastic pretty much doesn’t get recycled. So yeah these are high quality from germany, raised beds.
Alright, so besides that, so these 4, i got 4 of them only 40 bucks. Now aside from that, only got a few other things, you know. The thing i talked about a lot, specially because the gardener here is not going to be having time to invest in the garden, it’s critical that you guys invest in an irrigation system. So once again, i had to kind of like i’m on a budget so i had to just buy what’s going to work and i wouldn’t necessarily do it exactly like this. But this is going to work and it’s a cheap package. This is.
Called the landscape drip watering kit.And it includes all these different parts, the hole puncher, all the different accessories you need to plumb it in to your spigot on the wall.Like 20 drippers, which we have actually 20 plants.Big tubing, small tubing, stakes, everything for like 18 bucks.Amazing deal, because if you price that some of these parts separately, it would cost you a lot more.So i’m glad we have this. And then besides the irrigation system, another thing that’s critical is the watering timer. So your irrigation system comes on so that you don’t have to remember to water.It.
Will come on automatically and water so that you don’t have to.And yeah, this guy was $32 approximately. So i think, and then i bought some extra connectors. All the irrigation stuff was about $60 worth. Then finally we got a few free things i’m using. So we got free cardboard picked up at the local health food store when i was shopping there. The cardboard is going to basically line the bottom of the raised beds so that the weeds and the grass won’t grow up through the raised beds. And i want to be overlapping the cardboard at least twice.
And cover all the seams up to make sure nothing is going to grow through there. And place the cardboard, you know, on the edge of the bed and set the bed on top of it so that there’s no space in between and stuff’s going to grow up the edges. So yeah, you could get that in.Oh and the other thing that almost blew away, besides cardboard you could use something like paper bags.People sometimes use newspaper.I don’t recommend newspaper, it’s too thin and it’s got the newsprint. This is basically a 100 recyclable and reusable.
And you could use the paper like this if you don’t have the cardboard.I would recommend cardboard because it is thicker. And if you are going to use like brown paper bags like this, i would recommend, you know, unfurling them and then doing a couple layers so that they’re thick. The cardboard or the paper bags will break down over time. The earthworms will end up eating them and then you’ll have a connected raised bed, you know, soil to your earth soil, which will be good because now earthworms could come and go as they please.
The microbes could move and do what they want to do.And it just turns into nutrients, you know, for your garden. And the reason for this on the initial outset is because if you just start putting dirt on top of grass, the grass is going to say, oh yeah! good soil, and they’re going to grow right through it and come up in your garden. And that’s another reason why i bought the soil mixes that are composted. They should be seed free.So that’s going to also save your back some weeding.
The final thing i got for free, really cool, we got about 1 gallon of compost tea here. This is from the brite ideas hydroponics. You bring your own 1 gallon jug and they will, you know, give you some free compost tea to put in.So we’re going to go ahead and spread that out once we plant all the plants. So yeah, that’s pretty much what i got.To sum it up, i spent about $300 which was about the budget. And went to a couple places, brite ideas hydroponics about spending about $75 for the soil mix soil mender and the,.
The rock dust and the worm castings.Spent about $50 at the natural gardener for all the plants.I spent about $130 approximately at the home depot for two of the bagged soils and also the irrigation setup. And then, let’s see, oh i spent $40 for the raised bed.So i know you guys, some of you guys are number crunchers, you’re like crunching the numbers, john, you spent like $300 on all that stuff to make 2 raised garden beds! and you’re thinking, man, that’s a lot of money for growing a couple, 20 herb plants.
Well, what i want to talk to you guys about is this alright. So for example, for those of you guys that do real estate, right, you guys know if you buy a house, right, no longer do you have to pay rent, well maybe you got to pay your mortgage. But when you got your mortgage paid off, you don’t have to pay rent anymore, you live for free, right. And so your house in an investment.Otherwise you’re giving money, you know, to pay to the landlord that you’re basically pissing away because you’re never going to see a.
Cent of it again. But at least if you’re paying your mortgage, you’re paying some interest on it, but you’re making an investment right in your financial and having a place to live, right and likewise, with gardening, i’m not going to say it’s cheap. You could do it for free or cheap, we could just till this up in the back and maybe throw down a little bit of compost and plant some stuff, and that’d be great. But, you know, i want to, then you’d have a lot of like labor and weeding and all these things. And i just.
Don’t want to go there because we don’t even know the quality of this soil. That’s why i’m bringing in the soil. There are pros and cons to growing in a raised bed garden. But this is the method i recommend for beginners to start because there’s, you’re reducing the amount of variables that you could mess up on.So that you could be more successful. And the biggest one is actually getting healthy plants and getting good soil. But yeah, i mean, making a $300 investment in your garden is basically going to put money.
On your table because now you will be growing food. You’re going to be growing the most important thing you need to do, to eat every day, it’s food! and you could grow a higher quality food than the store, better tasting food than the store. And over time, although this is $300 now, this will pay you back because you just have to make the infrastructure investments.Like you have to buy your house once, you have to buy the garden bed once. All this stuff is to buy once except the plants that you could even start from seed to save money.
Next season. But if you’re new into gardening, i do recommend starting with plants. It’s going to make and ensure you guys have an easier time.Because growing things from seed, if you’re not, you know, have done it before, it can be challenging. If you get unhealthy plants, they may not make it, they might get eaten by bugs. But when you get healthy plants that are in good soil, it’s like you know, if you adopted a teenager. They’re already pretty independent man.And they might even be, you know, telling you where to go and.
Stuff. But if you have a baby from, you know, couple or few months old, it’s, you know, it depends on you.So your seedlings are going to depend on you more. And i kind of like to just have the plants do what they’re going to do.So yeah, invest in a garden. It’s one of the best investments you can make. And probably the best investment i ever made because it’s investment in my health. That’s worth more than any house or any kind of car or anything else in the world.
So i guess next let’s go ahead and set this guy up and show you guys how we’re going to mix in, add the soil, and get it all planted out.So the next step to setting up the raised bed garden is basically figuring out where you’re going to have the raised beds.So i could have chose to do it somewhere in the middle of the yard, somewhere really sunny. But because this is first time gardener and because we’re growing some herbs that may not like the full sun, we’re going to kind.
Of do it in a shady spot.Plus i don’t want to get too much sun today and this way i get to stay in the shade and stay a little bit cooler as well. This area actually gets nice afternoon shade. So that’s really good, specially here in hot and humid texas. This is going to be special beneficial for certain plants in the summer time that you don’t want to get beaten with sun 12 hours a day.So i have it currently set up with the, you know, this space would have like 3 nice raised beds with nice you know, pathways in between.
To get that mower in when they do the lawn mowing.I’m probably i’m going to, i was planning on doing like a set of 2 stacked high, so they’re going to be kind of higher instead of a single stack and doing 3 i don’t have quite enough irrigation equipment to set up 3, or the plants for that matter.I have barely enough to do two full ones.So this is kind of cool. They’ll be able to add on, you know, another set later by just plumbing in to the irrigation really simply, and adding two more and the soil.So yeah,.
So what we’re going to set up, probably these first two.And we’ll see if i end up going with one or two double stacks, we’ll see.So once you have the proper placements, the next step is you’re going to want to lay down the cardboard. So let me go ahead and do a closeup on that for you guys.So now we’re going to go ahead and line the bottom over our raised bed with cardboard. And most of you guys might just take the cardboard, alright john, i took the cardboard, lined.
It on the bottom, lined it up, good enough, let’s go ahead and get the next piece, put it on there, line it all up and then you’ll be done, right no, man! it’s not good enough! my mom used to like scold me when i didn’t clean the bathroom good enough and i’d have to redo it again. So to this day man i’m anal cleaning the bathroom and doing things properly, because otherwise i’m scared my mom will scold me.Anyways.It made me the man i am today, so i appreciate that mom.Even if it was a lot of scolding.
Alright, so anyways, this is not good enough because what will happen as i’ve seen many times before, you know, weeds will find a way into good soil. And you’ll be filling this with some good soil.So what they’re going to do is in the little spaces and the cracks, they’re going to find their way up.So we want to remove those spaces, man.So what we want to do is we’re going to go ahead and take this. And the cool thing is, this cardboard is actually the, about the width of the raised bed, you know, end.
To end.So we’re going to simply raise this raised bed up, place it underneath the edges just a little bit.So all the edges are covered. And then set it down.So do you guys see the difference now the raised bed is sitting on top of the cardboard. There’s no spaces underneath there as long as they get lined up properly for that to come up.In addition, this is, the cardboard is still double thick.I didn’t, you know, unfurl it, you know, like this.I left them solid. So we have two layers of cardboard,.
Which i might even, you know, put another layer on even when these, these holes are here, there’s another layer underneath it.So even if you have holes, you want to make sure you can’t see any dirt, you can’t se any grass, you can’t see nothing beneath it.If i had more cardboard i’d probably lay more down.I don’t know, i could say you could never use too much cardboard, but if your bed is half cardboard and half dirt, that’s too much.Alright! so continuing on to this other side, same thing, we got these nice size boxes,.
Perfect size actually. We’re going to go ahead and lift this raised bed up, get it underneath and put it over all the way to the edge.Man, i love how this cardboard fits exactly, right.I didn’t even plan it.And just some things were meant to happen. So yeah, totally perfect. That’s totally covered, that’s a pretty good job.I got to do the next one and then with the extra cardboard i’ll probably just line up the top on it.Just to have some extra protection.Oh and remember to double wrap it.
So now that i got the raised bed built, which was super simple, and the cardboard underneath it, super simple.I mean, any one of you guys could do this! it doesn’t take rocket science to start a garden, man.Seriously, just do it.Do it! alright.Next step is we’re just going to go ahead and mix up the compost and we’re going to mix it up actually in place. So what we’re going to do is we’re just going to go ahead and start cutting open bags and i’m going to probably put 3 bags of the soil mix by.
Soil mender in there.2 of the all natural raised bed potting mixes in there. And then 3 of the triple power compost in each bed to fill them up.Now i do have it currently stacked with the one high. We’re going to go ahead and put on a double stack and then i’m probably even going to put on a third stack, just so that when i’m mixing stuff up, stuffs not flowing out the edge. And this is actually really cool that i’m able to do this.So let me go ahead and show you guys how to easily just stick on another level.
To these raised beds made out of pallet containers. So how this works, really simple. You’re going to take another one and just open this up, and if you every played with lincoln logs like i did when i was a kid, you could do one of these too.Really easy, really simple.Open it up and it has these little things that just line up on the outside corners. And line them up.It would be helpful if you had a second person to do this.Alright! look at that! double stack raised bed.All ready to go.I think we could actually.
Even start filling the soil. Now what i got now are some scissors. Now you’re saying, john, you said you’re doing it with no tools! sorry, i got some scissors.I could sit here and use my teeth to like rip open these plastic bags but scissors are a lot more civilized. So before i, you know, cut open all these bags and unfurl them out, it looks pretty good, i want to talk more about the soil. The soil you use in your raised bed garden can make or break you.You know, i’ve met several gardeners that i’ve met over the.
Years, my viewers actually, said, john, you know, i tried to garden and i bought some stuff at the big box store, i put it in my garden and nothing grew.No matter what i did, i couldn’t get growing. And, you know, i’m not there to see exactly what’s happening. But if they’re just buying stuff from the big box store, the chances are the compost or the mixture you’re buying is not the highest quality. And that’s just the fact of the matter, my experience, right.I had to go with these choices because they.
Were like the lowest cost per cubic foot. But if i had more of an unlimited budget, the soil that i would go with hands down is dr earth’s soil that’s now available at home depot.Their potting soil blend. That’s actually what i filled up my raised beds with myself, you know.I got two pallets of it, and filled up two of my raised beds with that stuff like 75.I put a bottom layer of just cheap stuff on the bottom to get rid of it because it was some smelly old stinky compost.
The rest i filled up with the dr earth’s potting soil blend. And man that stuff grows amazing. So you can get good stuff, you know, in most places but you’re going to have to pay for it.For example, you know, my average cost was like maybe less than $3 a cubic foot. This is 5, this was 4.The dr earth is like $8 or something, maybe 7, $7$8 , depending on the mixture you get, cubic foot.So that’s going to really kind of set you back some.
Cash. But, you know, you will have a higher level and probability of success. And that’s what i want to teach you guys, right.I want you guys to be successful. And i can’t control all your variables for you, depending on your geographic region, the weather, the water you’re using, the soil you’re getting. But what i can show you guys is how to set it up properly and maybe some steps to ensure that you’re going to get a better soil. For instance, you know, if i was here in austin, i would have took my truck, if i had a truck,.
Drove all the way out to houston and probably go up to a place, i think it’s near spring, houston, anyways it’s really north, and i’d go to the soil place.I have a tutorial i made on it, it’s best compost in texas. And i’d get my soil there because i know their stuff is really good, right. And a lot of places unfortunately, you know, places that make compost and mixes and stuff, what they’re really doing is they’re recyclers. They’re not really in the business to make compost. That’s kind of like the side business.
The real business is actually they’re getting inputs from, you know, waste streams, whether that’s, you know, wood chips, whether that’s forest, you know, products, whether that’s sawdust, whether that’s mushroom compost, whether that’s cotton burs. They’re getting all these things for free or cheap. They compost them down, break them down, turn them into soil, put them into bags and then sell them to you on the back end.So a lot of these things are not formulated for the highest quality. They’re just trying to move products through because, once again, this about a commercialized system that we live in.Whether.
You’re buying commercialized food that’s maybe not the highest quality because they’re just growing for the size, for the pound, to grow the biggest stuff because they’re paid per pound not on the quality. So the quality of the compost, right. They’re not being paid on the quality of the compost if it’s really good stuff, right they’re getting paid to just to get rid of the stuff, because they got a constant inflow of all the materials, they got to also constantly have it go out.And that’s why i like dr earth’s, you know. They take more time to ensure it’s.
Done right. And of course you’re going to pay for that. And that’s why i also recommend local soil yards that make it themselves and not just, you know, resell other stuff, right. And you’ll know if they’re making it themselves if you see people dropping off, you know, loads of yard waste and clippings and all these things. Then they’re really doing it themselves, and also ask them for a nutritional assay, you know.It will show the npk values and different nutrients in the compost. And that’s a good guideline so you could compare.
Things one to another. The other thing you’re going to want to ask for is a food soil web testing. And most of the places are going to say, what what’s that we don’t know what that is.You know, you don’t need to explain it to them. You could say alright, thank you.Because places that really know what’s that, they’ll have food soil web testing. And as long as the food soil web testing you see and the numbers look good because there’s a reference range, get that stuff! because that tells me that that place.
Cares about the quality! we’re losing the quality in america.Whether that’s american cars or that’s american compost or whether that’s american grown fruits and vegetables. So only you could control the quality if you’re doing it yourself by composting yourself at home.So i do encourage all you guys to compost yourself at home. The other thing i finally recommend is, you know, try to get your soil in bulk to save the most money whenever you can.Because the soil was probably the biggest investment that i made in this garden today. And if you are going to invest in soil, you’re not really.
Sure after seeing all the tests which is the best, get different soils. The ones that you’re considering, the ones that look the best to you, and get a bucketful and do a pot test.So like get a bucket of this soil, a bucket of this soil, a bucket of this soil, grow a tomato or maybe a radish or some arugula in the pot and see which one really grows better.I mean, if one withers and doesn’t make it then you know, hey man, shit, i better not buy that one.But if you tested different ones you could compare it at least against.
That crop you specifically grow, and hopefully that’s one you’re going to want to grow, to know how it does. And that’s the way you really know.Because people email me all the time, john, is this good compost and they could, i see the name and maybe it’s a little write up on it, i don’t know man, i got to feel it, i got to touch it, i got to smell it, i got to, i got to see it man.And so i really can’t even tell anybody.
How good a compost is unless i’ve seen it, right so anyways, with that, let’s go ahead and see how this compost is.Alright! we’re dumping out this all natural raised bed compost right here. And to me, this looks pretty nice, rich and black, which is, you know, one good thing. Also smells like some composted manure. The other thing, it’s pretty rich, it sticks together little bit.But there’s a lot of pieces of sticks and chips and stuff in there, you know, a few more than i would definitely like.I’d like to have this screened out a little it.
More. You could take and do that yourself but, you know what they’re trying to get rid of wood chips in the compost. And, i mean, they do play a, they do play a role in the compost.I’m glad there’s not an overly excessive amount. There’s some clods that we’re breaking up, you know.A good amount of the perlite in there.I think i’m pretty happy overall with this mix, for what i got.Next thing we’re going to do is we’re going to go ahead and start unbagging these.
Guys and blending it all up.So i got that raised bed mix all spread out.You know, seems pretty good.I mean, it’s just a standard bag mixture.Seems pretty rich though for what it is.You know it’s definitely better than the stuff i originally got from kellogg’s myself, which is i think i got like vegetable garden soil. This is definitely a better mixture than that.I think i paid around $3.33 a cubic yard, so it’s probably worth another buck or so to get this stuff.Next we’re going to go ahead and dump out this soil mix by.
Soil mender.Take it in there, just flip it over and dump it out.And alright, so this mixture looks like a lot of soil with some compost. And this is basically a filler, because i got these big raised beds to fill. Also this adds some nice clean organic soil to the mixture, that will be a good thing. So we’re just going to go ahead and spread this out evenly and try to do my best to mix it all up.I am the human mixer.Alright! next we’re going to go ahead and add the sustainable organic triple power compost.
By gosh. This stuff, because it did rain, it’s a tad bit wet.Definitely not a lot of material in the bag.Definitely pretty good, definitely it’s nice and black, smells really neutral, really good. The challenge i see lots of, you know, particulate, a little bit more than i like to see optimally. But we’re just going to go ahead and mix all this stuff up.Alright, so now i got that mixed up.We’re just going to go ahead and add another bag of the soil mender.Which i kind of see as a filler.Would i buy it.
Again yeah, i mean, it’s probably cool.Add some organic soil and some additional compost. It’s a nice blend, you know. One of the things i really like to do is not just use any like all the raised beds soil.Because then whether that soil is good or not good, that’s what you got.And there’s a limited scope of nutrients in that raised bed soil, based on whatever the formulation is out of.So i want you guys to have like a wide spectrum of different composts.I mean,.
Get 10 different composts if you guys can.In my opinion in most cases that’s going to be a lot better than just getting one kind because every different kind of compost is going to have different bacterial levels, different levels of nutrients, and made from different food stuffs. And likewise, you know, when you guys eat your diet.I don’t just ever recommend you guys eating mcdonalds all day and eat that every day. You’re getting a small assortment of foods. But from the produce department of your, you know, grocery.
Store and eat one of every different kind of food.Or if you’re eating from your garden, you know, eating a little bit of everything out of your garden, you know.Have everything to get the most amount of nutrients in you, you’re going to be the healthiest and likewise with our soil.We could, you know, maximize the amount of things that go into make it.I believe it’s going to be more healthy.Alright, let’s add another bag of this triple power. And then i get to be the human mixer.
Again.Alright! john kohler! human mixer! wait, where’s my dump truck alright! so i got that stuff mixed up pretty good. All incorporated and, you know, we used one bag of the raised bed mix, two bags of the soil mix, and 2 bags of the triple power. We’re almost to the top.Well, not quite, we probably got about a quarter way of it left to the top of the first bed.I was originally told when i was buying these raised beds, the measurements were 6 inches deep, and i measured them, they’re actually 7 and 12 inches deep.So i measured.
Out for, you know, 12 inches of soil. The beds are actually 15 inches. So they’re not going to be completely filled to the top. There are pros and cons for the bed height, you know.12 inches is what i like to have optimally. The challenge with that is that it may cost you more money to get that much soil to fill it up.One of the things you can do is use cheap filler soil, cheap inexpensive compost, maybe some clean manure you get locally to line the few inches on the bottom. Then fill up the top with the more expensive stuff.
We’re going to go with the taller beds because it kind of just looks more solid like a real garden, and also gives you more flexibility because the soil, the water holding capability will be more, the roots cold go deeper if they want, you have more flexibility to grow deeper root crops like carrots or gobo or radishes, daikons, they get really deep. That’s what we’re going to go with it.So i guess we’re going to go ahead and add the last of the ingredients. The kellogg’s raised bed mix.Next bag of the soil mender! and then, final bag of the triple power.I.
Know you might be thinking, john, what about the worm castings and the rock dust yes, we got those coming up next. The rock dust i got right here. We’re going to go ahead and cut this baby open, and we’re going to add half the bag, about 20 lbs to the top half of this, these last couple things i’ve put it.I don’t want to bury the rock dust too deeply.Try to evenly distribute this, about half the bag.Best to wear a dust mask when you’re putting all the rock dust.
Luckily, some of the soil is pretty moist so we’ll get it all moist, it won’t blow away that much. Now i get to mix.Alright! got this all mixed up.Leveled it off.I think we’ve pretty much got like maybe 11 inches worth. It’s fairly deep but we still got a lot of edging here to go.I personally don’t like generally to plant out my beds when they’re kind of like this. And there’s pros and cons to it.I mean, there’s pros and cons to everything in life.
I’d like to raise it up to the top so there’s more soil for my roots to grow. But raising it up and planting it, you know, not all the way up to the top, you know, some of the cons are you’re missing soil. But some of the pros are maybe you have some wind protection, maybe you have a little bit of sun protection, some shading protection. So that’s kind of cool.I don’t have enough soil to raise it up all the way.So this is what we will.
Be going with today. Now the last thing i’d like to say is, you know, as i had been mixing this compost i found a few things, including these guys, sticks. These are probably one of the largesr size sticks. There’s a lot of smaller pieces.Sticks and little stones. So you know, the old nursery nursery you used to sing,’ sticks and stones can break my bones but names will never hurt me that’s completely false, man. We’ve been lied to all these years.Sticks and stones they can break your bones, but words also hurt.So i implore you guys,.
Whether you’re making a youtube comment, talking to somebody in person, writing them an email or whatever, think about what you’re saying and think about the other person and how they’re going to feel when they read it.Specially some of my comments hurt my feelings sometimes. And it’s quite sad.So yeah, please, you know, use and choose your words carefully to be more compassionate on the planet with others.Alright! so now i’m going to start filling up the second bed.And we’ll see you on the other side when i’m done.So just about got both these guys finished.Last thing we.
Got is the worm castings.I wasn’t able to get too many of these. So i’m going to try to stretch them.Let’s see, i’m going to use probably one third the bag in each bed.Nice, rich and black, how they should be.One third in this bed.And then we’re going to save a third of the bag to actually put a little bit in each of the planting holes. You could also mix in some of the rock dust in with this mixture to put in each of the.
Planting holes as well.Another thing you can do with the earthworm castings is actually brew those with some molasses or some sugar in a compost tea that you aerate with like an air stone from a fish tank but an oversized one.So now what i’d like to do is actually go over what i thought of the different soil bags, soil products i bought, one at a time.First, earthworm castings.I mean, they look just like earthworm castings, so that’s pretty good. They’re finely sifted out.Good deal on that.Let’s see, soil mender minerals plus. This was the rock dust that.
I got this time. It’s a texas company here. What i think about this stuff, i think that it wasn’t finely ground. There’s a lot of little pebbles and things in there that will break down over time. But i don’t think that they are broken down as much as i’d like them to be.I would have preferred to get the azomite, which was also available at the brite ideas hydro that i went to.But this stuff was like $25 for 40 lbs and the azomite was like $36 and i’m kind of already over budget, so that didn’t happen.But.
That’s what i would have done. And optimally i would have like to put like 1 bag, 40 lbs, per bed. That would be a good sizable investment in rock dust and you probably wouldn’t have to do it again for many years.Next, we got this stuff. This is the tripe power compost. This is the only product that i found small bits of plastic in.There wasn’t a lot, i know some of you guys are really plasticphobes and stuff. But there’s a few bits, not that bad.It is a fairly woody material,.
Nice rich and black, broken down, fairy neutral smell.I like it a lot except for the fact that it just wasn’t broken down as much as i’d like.Maybe they could have used a smaller size screen to screen it out. That would work. But they’re probably not going to do that because once again they’re just trying to move material out.And if they have the material on the lot to break down into smaller particle size, they’re losing money.I don’t blame them.Let’s see, next, this guy is next. The soil mender soil mix.And it says it’s, on the.
Bottom, you know, it says ideal soil for raised beds and container gardening’.You know i would not use this solely for raised beds or container gardening at all.I mean, this could be part of your mixture like i did. That being said, after getting it out, looking at it, it’s a very inconsistent product.I mean it, there’s some, you know, composted cotton burs and organic top soil in there but there’s some other composted items in there as well that i wasn’t quite sure, and the color would vary batch to batch.
So i was quite curious about that as well.Next time i might buy like maybe 2 bags of this total, one bag for each, or maybe 3 bags, 1 12 bags and 1 12 bags.I think i got a little bit too many of this this time but it was a good price and i needed something to fill up the raised bed.And potting mix by kellogg’s organics, what i think of this product, you know, this is probably one of the better mixes that i actually put in.You know, it was fairly a good mixture.
Fairly well broken down but still too many chunks for what i’d like to see, too much wood product in there, but a good value overall at $5 a cubic foot compared to like, you know, the $3 or a little bit less for that, and $4 for this stuff.I mean, i definitely think this is better. But once again i like to blend and mix everything. Now i wouldn’t just solely fill my raised bed with this stuff.I would like to also add other things. So if i was to do this again, had access to a truck, i would probably go down to organics.
By gosh, their yard, and just buy like a dump load of their compost, the good stuff maybe, the triple power that i got.And then actually blend up some vermiculite and some coconut coir andor the peat moss from the hydro store that i went to.I think that would be a much better mixture to like try to do the one third, one third, one third mixture maybe, because the vermiculite is kind of expensive.I think it’s like $10 a cubic foot. That’s why i just couldn’t get it.I would really like to add that to this mixture because this mixture.
I mean, it seems pretty good, but for a raised bed mixture like we want more potting soil, light and fluffily consistency, not too light. But this is a little bit heavier than i’d optimally like. But i didn’t have the funds to do that this time. And, you know, what i’d like to say is that gardening is a learning experience, you know. And as you, as you grow like, you know, you learn. So like, i learned about these products this time, how they are to feel, to touch them, to mix them, to see what they look like.
And i’ll know next time to do it maybe a little bit differently. And specially after this season of growing and how this grows, then i’ll know better if this stuff was really good or not, right and that’s what’s life is all about. It’s about learning, right if you, if you’re a little baby and you’re trying to walk and you fall over and you crawl because you can’t walk, you don’t continue to crawl your whole life, everybody walks. And you just need to learn how to do it.And just like gardening.I know.
A lot of you guys that are watching this are new and never set up a garden before, and you will make mistakes. But embrace your mistakes, man. That’s the fun of life. You get to learn what to do, what works, what doesn’t work. And you get to change what you’re doing so that everything you’re doing in your life works, including your girlfriend or boyfriend if that’s not currently working. So just realize it and maybe make some changes if you need to.I know there’s those of you guys that are out there that are in a.
Relationship that’s not maybe quite working as well as you’d like. But yeah, i’m not here to give relationship advice, i just do gardening advice.Relationships man, that’s too tough.Luckily i’m in a good one.But anyways, yeah, learn as you grow, right.Learn as you grow.Very important. And yeah, don’t be afraid to experiment, and try to get the best stuff you can.And if it doesn’t work out then change it up a little bit, you know.Optimally i’d like to add some vermiculite to this.I’d like to add the rock dust instead.
Of the other stuff.I’d like to add an extra bag of worm castings like one bag for each bed.I’d like to add some coconut coir also.It just wasn’t in the budget this time, so it didn’t happen.I’m going to go ahead and get mixing this stuff up and then we’re going to be back at you and we’ll install the irrigation system next and show you guys how easy it is even if you’ve never done it before. So i just got done mixing in the worm castings like just right up on the top level. And then.
I was thinking about it and i was like this, you know, the soil not coming up to the top or even close to the top, i mean, it’s, it’s pretty far down, maybe 6 inches down.It was just bothering me a lot, man.So i just had to go out and get some more soil, on my own dime actually, to fill this up, to share with you guys, you know, like the proper way to do it.I mean you guys could do this if you guys want.I’m not going.
To tell you what you should or should not do in gardening. But i have a way that i like to do things. And damn it if i’m installing a garden, i’m going to do it my way even if it’s not covered in the budget, out of my own pocket. So that’s what i did.I went out and got a few more items.I had to spring for the best stuff. And, you know, this is just stuff that i’d recommend for you guys. You know, if you don’t want to screw around.
With like crappy soil and if you got some money, because this stuff will set you back a pretty penny, this is the dr earth’s pot of gold premium potting soil.So this is what i use to fill my raised beds.If this is a bit too much, what i might do is get the other dr earth’s product they have and this is available at home depot. This was $12.97 or whatever. They have a cheap one for like $9.97.I would have probably went and opted for the.
$9.97 one which is pretty similar to this one, and then actually added my own vermiculite. The ingredients on the back of the bag are forest humus, fir bark, peat moss, pumice, earthworm castings, kelp meal, alfalfa meal, soy bean meal, seaweed extract, aloe vera, yuca extract, oyster shell and dolomitic lime, endo and ecto mycorrhizae and beneficial soil microbes. So that’s why i like this because it not only has, you know, a spectrum of different ingredients which is going to add fertility to your soil, but also it has beneficial bacteria.
As well as the mycorrhizae. And this is the bacteria and the fungi that will help, you know, your plants, convert the organic matter into nutrients. And, you know, while some of the other products may have that, this one they add them in there when making the product, which many don’t do.Yeah this have some extra special stuff, like the castings already built in, that many places won’t do because it does cost more and they figure people are cheap. But i know some of you guys out there want to buy quality, want to buy.
Good stuff, and that’s why i like the dr earth’s.So we’re going to go ahead and cut this open. Now we’re just going to go ahead and dump a little bit out, to show you guys or maybe we’ll just show you guys. But look at this stuff. If we like lay it on the soil, compared to the stuff that we already had put in the bed, this stuff is nice, rich and black. If we go through like with my hand like this, you know, this is all fine stuff.I mean, yeah there’s a few like, you know, pieces of wood in there.But.
It’s hardly none.We pick up the stuff it is, i mean, there’s a lot more woody substance and bits in there. So i really like the consistency of the, this, you know, dr earth stuff. And if you want the best, this is the stuff you’re going to want to buy the dr earth’s for sure. Now i do know they formulate this regionally. And i did have a batch, you know, in my region and it was excellent. And, you know, i don’t know when they formulate things regionally.
If they had the quality control that they have in, you know, out in the west.Hopefully they do.But i guess time will tell.I know the owner, spoke to him personally, of this company and, you know, he has a very high ethics and morals and he is there to help people, just like i am, to grow healthy foods. So i applaud him for that.If i could have afforded it i probably would have bought like, i don’t know, 46 bags, to top this up all the way to the top. That being said, i’m on a budget myself. So we bought one of these,.
We bought two of these, one for each bed.And then when i was at home depot, you know, one of the tricks if you guys want to save money, is you always want to look for the ripped bags.So we got this bag. This is a ripped bag.And sometimes they’ll have like a cart with ripped bags or a pallet with ripped bags that say ripped bag product 50 off. Most of the time they have mulches which are dumb. But sometimes they’ll have soil. They didn’t have any at this home depot but i know the deal.So i went out to the, you know,.
Employee and said hey do you guys have any ripped bags and he said yes.And he, i said what’s the discount, he said well it depends on the bag, why don’t you show me.So i showed him one.And i’m like, he’s like yeah that bag is ripped but we could tape it up, ain’t no discount on that one.I showed him another one and he’s like alright well the discount on that one is like 10.And that was actually another dr earth’s but the rip wasn’t that big.I’m like that’s still kind of expensive. And then.
I showed him this bag. This bag had gotten a nice chunk out of it like here and here, i mean it probably lost maybe 8 of the product inside. And he said oh we’ll give you this one since the bag is ripped pretty good, for 25 off.I’m like i’ll take it.He pulled it out, he put it on the cart, he started pushing it to the checkout and then he went and he took this and he kind of ripped it some more.I didn’t do that, mind you, he.
Did.He’s like we just got to make it look good.I’m like alright whatever you got to do, man, thanks i appreciate it.So we got this stuff. This is, you know, the kellogg’s all natural garden soil. Now i do not recommend using any kind of garden soil mix for a raised bed unless it’s just one of your ingredients, you know. This could be like the compost ingredient. And the one third compost, one third vermiculite and one third coconut coir, or some peat moss, sorry.Because what’s in here, it says, this product contains recycled forest products,.
Composted poultry manure and organic fertilizer’.So, let’s go ahead and dump some of this stuff out.And i’ll probably put half the bag in each one of these beds. And i’m going to mix it very well.So well, the cool thing about this, this is two cubic feet, after the 25 off discount it was like 5 bucks. So that means i got each cubic foot of this stuff for $2.50, that’s you know, a really good price for basically some organic compost that’s hopefully pretty good.Let’s go ahead and check it out.
Alright, this stuff is nice, rich, black and dark, really nice. The challenge i see with it is that there is a lot of the wood chips matter in there, you know, the dr earth stuff is a lot better consistency.I know you guys can’t really see that on the camera, but this is just like this would fit through a smaller sieve size.I’d probably say a quarter inch. And this might be going through like the half inch screen right there. But nonetheless, it will help us to add inches to get us up closer to the top.So probably going to end.
Up mixing one cubic foot in here and here, and then i’ll probably, you know, mainly put this up on the top. Now, for shits and giggles, i went to lowe’s to check out the lowe’s deals because, you know, i want to check out all the big box stores because these are the stores that you guys probably have near you to see what is available, and see what people do sometimes. And i like to do that.So i’m not familiar with this area and kind of like the regional compost that are available here.So i found this one.This.
Is by the company, hapigro by hope agri products inc.And it says 100 organic compost.Let’s go ahead and move this up, show you guys what we got.So this one, 100 organic compost, and it says ingredients, it’s made out of composted bark fines. So this is probably, you know, they’re probably getting the bark fines from like when they mill wood to make the 2 by 4s to build the beds or whatever, you know, they got all the bark on the outside they got to do something with.Because the.
Virgin wood on the inside, not the bark, is used for construction.Bark fines is probably go to a place like this that hopefully composted fairly into a nice product and then they bag it and then sell it for you.So let’s go ahead and take a look and see what’s inside here. Now, the only reason, and i will stress this, the only reason why i bought this bag is because this 2 cubic feet of product was like $3 and 40 cents after tax.So that’s like a buck fifty a cubic.
Foot, which is an insanely good price. But, you know, if we go ahead and open this up and we dump some of this stuff out.And because this was from bark fines, this may adversely effect your ph.You know, we got some, we got some what they would call compost, you know, but what i would call mulch.Like if they sifted this out maybe through a half inch, quarter inch screen, we might have some compost. But this is kind of more of a mulchy material. It’s not like chips or anything.I mean it is kind of broken down a little.
Bit, but not much. And some people always ask me, john, i know in your original tutorials man, you filled your beds with the 100 organic compost. Can i do that too’ and, you know, like this is my caviar.I like, if you get the same compost that i filled my beds with 100 organic compost that’s broken down to a nice fine structure and nice consistency, then yes you absolutely can because it worked for me.That being said, unfortunately sonoma compost went out of business, so you can’t do that anymore with their compost. But you.
Could probably get their, you know, something like their compost at other places. But you sure as hell can’t do it if you get this compost because, i mean, this stuff is like a mulch.I mean, you could grow certain things in mulch but certain things ain’t going to grow.So that’s why i don’t necessarily recommend growing in 100 organic compost. It depends on the compost itself, right. That’s the most important thing that when you’re selecting soils.I mean, i know a lot of you guys are cheap.I’m freaking cheap, man.I would.
Like to fill up my whole beds with this. But it’s not, you’re not going to get the best results in my opinion, right. So, i mean, yeah, this stuff is like a dollar fifty per cubic foot. This stuff is already premixed with everything you need is i think around $7$8 a cubic foot approximately. And yeah, this stuff is really nice stuff. This stuff is cheap stuff. You guys get what you pay for! but some places will try to rip you off and then you won’t really get what you pay for.So that’s really sad.But yeah, i said.
Everything out with, with soil and everything previous in this tutorial. So listen to that.I encourage you guys, you know, not necessarily shop at your big box store to get your bag soil.Number one, it’s going to cost you more money.Number two, you know, the quality may or may not be there depending on the product you get.And i haven’t checked out every product in the market, let’s be serious.I try to when i can.The other thing is get a mixture, you know.If you’re kind of cheap like i am, you’re filling beds that are.
Like this tall like i am, yeah, get one of the, one bag of this stuff, right one bag’s not going to hurt you.I mean, i got like, i don’t know, maybe 20 bags of product maybe so far, close to 20 bags of product so far in here. One bag which is 1 cubic foot, in this bed, in this bed, evenly mixed throughout the whole thing is not going to really mess you up.Although there is probably already bark fines in all these products that we’re looking at, to a much smaller degree. So raising that quantity up a little bit. And, you know,.
That’s why i really like to use a mixture of ingredients. The more kind of mixture of things you have and the higher quality of each of the individual mixes you guys got, you know, the higher probability of success you’re going to get.And i like to have a lot of different mixes because every different mix may have different nutrients and beneficial microbes in there for your plants.Anyways, i’m going to go ahead and getting a mixing this and the rest of these things into this bed and will come back at you when i’m ready for the next step.
Alright, so as you guys could see, my forehead’s like a waterfall, dripping with sweat, lots of good workout today.I encourage you guys, you know, i mean when you garden you get a lot of good things, right. You get sun to make vitamin d, you get some exercise, you get to move your body, specially move your body and some positions and things that you don’t normally do, which is good to stay active and fit. And, yeah, it’s fun.You get fresh air.And you’re going to get food to eat later!.
So, i just mixed up all that stuff and it took a little bit of energy but i’m good. And i’m good to go for some more. And next thing we’re going to do is going to go ahead and add in the last two ingredients. So like as i said, put your best foot forward.I bagged up some of the, you know, couple two inches on the top back into these bags here.So we’re going to dump this off. This is the stuff that i added like the worm castings in, you.
Know, previously, because i didn’t want to just bury all this good stuff. So we’re going to dump this out.And knock it down.Make it like level.I’m really glad i went and got the extra couple cubic feet.Maybe like three and a half cubic feet for each bed.It really is going to bring it up to the top.And look a lot nicer. And plants are going to have more space to spread their roots. And also they’re going to have some really nutritious stuff because i got the dr earth stuff here.
Alright, next let’s go ahead and dump the rest of this dr earth stuff.Nice, rich, black, man.If i could have i would have filled the whole bed with this stuff. But not in the budget. So what i’m going to do is i’m going to spread this along the top and go in to the second layer that i just kind of like put in a couple top inches, and just kind of blend these gently so i have some of the best stuff for it, so that the roots are quite happy.
Alright! got this all mixed out.And we got it all pretty much leveled off.I like everything looking nice and level, nice and neat.I would probably could have went to like another cubic foot of stuff. But i’m glad we added the 3 and 12 cubic feet to bring these raised beds up to like within an inch or two from the top.Looks a lot cleaner, a lot better in my opinion.Plus, we got some really good stuff here up at the top.Now if i was to do this soil blend over again, i think i’d pretty much do everything similar.
I would add probably at least a bag total of vermiculite. That would add another $40 to the cost approximately. To both beds add a good percentage of that.Since we didn’t really have any of that stuff, we got some perlite and some pumice in there with some of the mixes. And then the other thing i’d do, i’d probably add maybe like, i don’t know, two cubic feet of coconut coir to each one.And of course, i’d also try to source some higher quality compost locally if i was able, based on and made out of fruit and vegetable.
